Chocolate Brownies
Was thereDuring the Columbian Exposition in 1892, the chef of the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago invented the brownie. Bertha Palmer wanted a dessert that women could eat without getting their hands dirty when put into box lunches. Sears and Roebuck published the first chocolate brownie recipe in their 1898 catalogue.

Review: Food and Wine Magazine
A good subscriptionWell, in my never ending quest for more things food I picked up a copy of the latest Food & Wine. I have to admit, I am a foodie, but not a wine drinker, so some of this magazine may be lost on me. To start I really enjoy the indexes that this magazine includes - one for all of the recipes and one for all of the wines. I really think it is great that they link the wines to a recipe in the issue.

La Grenouille
If you likeBy all evidence, the current Times critic finds French food boring, so I doubt he has plans to spend much time at La Grenouille. But were he to review it again, I doubt that it would retain its three-star status, as I can think of any number of better restaurants to which he has awarded only two. The overall experience is still one of gracious luxury, but the cooking has probably seen better days.

Sushi Fun
If you're on your way to your local Japanese restaurant, here's what you need to know about sushiWe’re not going to bother delving into the history of sushi. Just know that it’s considered to be a Japanese dish. Instead, let’s jump right in and decide what to eat. Most sushi restaurants will give you two options: to eat at a bar or at a table. If you’re at the bar, check out the selections in the refrigerated display case. If you’re at a table, the waiter will bring an a la carte menu, a sushi checklist of sorts. This is where it can start to get complicated… there are many types of sushi. Fortunately, sushi can be categorized into two types: nigiri and maki.

Non-Stick Coatings
Here are some problems with cooking with non-stick pansI bake on stainless steel baking sheets, bake my bread in stainless steel pans or in stoneware and do my oven and stove-top cooking in cast iron, glass, enamel or stainless steel. Everything turns out just fine. Today I want to address the dangers of non-stick coatings on pans. I can hear the dreaded cries now - it is so CONVENIENT! It is so easy to clean up …..I know, I know….but what I want to ask you is this….IS IT WORTH IT?

Chocolate Cashew Bread
If you need something with breadAnyway, this recipe comes from my stack of holiday magazines. This particular magazine, Better Homes and Gardens Christmas Baking, also brought us Cinnamon Swirl Bread this holiday season. I really liked this bread. Cashews are one of my favorites, although I don’t bake with them much. I did find that the bread was best served warm. It tended to seem a bit dry otherwise.
